Security Today

November 2001

The events of 0911 and subsequent have served to focus the world's attention on Al Qaeda - and the free world, headed by the United States, have pledged to rid the world of terrorism. At least they have stated that this is their aim, regardless of how long it takes.

Much as I hate to say it, this war is shaping up to become similar to the war on drugs; that is to say that it will be long and costly, and may be completely ineffectual in the long term. Over time, it may disappear  Into the background of our consciousness except when we are involved with a particular event. I sincerely hope this is not the case, but I fear it will be.

In my view, the war on drugs is simply the most visible aspect of the war on gangs, and in fact is probably just an aspect of the new war on terrorism and the old war on country-based warlords of the past. The transportation and communications infrastructure today means that it is no longer necessary (or even desirable) for all involved to be physically in one place (country, region) in order to wage war, terrorism, organized criminal activity, or vandalism.
