Announcing! - Drop in Thursdays

Wimsey will be opening its doors for drop in visits on Thursday evenings from about 5:30PM to 7:00PM. This will be an ongoing thing unless attendance is too low - but we expect that this will not be a problem.

The topic for this first drop in will be interesting. Gary Gunderson (gary@wimsey.com) has compiled and will be talking about a MOO. If you don't know anything about these creatures, you might want to come just to be informed. If you do know something, you might want to come and help us define the direction our MOO will go (and volunteer to help build it.)

This MOO software is what is being used for the well known Lambda-Moo which is a research project of Xerox PARC. I know at least one lady who met her husband while interacting with the Lambda-Moo, so you know this is heady stuff.

Our object with this project is to create an environment which our users can participate in and develop towards a meeting and messaging facility that our business and recreational people might use in their Internet journeys. Come and see what it is all about.

In addition, we will be holding a series of Computer Workshops on various topics. The first of these will be on Thursday September 1 at 7:00PM and will be on Installing and using the Apple Macintosh Wimsey Kit Software. Bring your computer (complete with keyboard and monitor and modem) and we will have power and phone lines available for use in setting up and dialing out.

This workshop will be 2 hours long and is $50.00 per person (or couple on one computer). There is limited space, so please register early. For registration, leave a message for

macsupport@wimsey.com
or phone our office during office hours and leave your name and a number where you can be reached during the afternoon or evening.

Power Outage - Wimsey was down for a short time

Wimsey was down Monday August 22 sometime between 6:30AM and 8:30AM for long enough to correct a low voltage problem with our power. A minor problem with vanbc required it to be re-booted about 2PM that day again. All is now well.

New Mac Page

Bob Elliot has been hard at work putting together a new look and new information for all of our Mac users out there.

New Lines

We have ordered a new number for Burnaby. It will initially have 6 lines on it connected to our DigiBoard serial ports and will be specifically for interactive and UUCP connections. The lines will be in around Aug 22 and will have 14,400 modems on them for now.

We will also be upgrading our Burnaby PPP/SLIP lines to US Robotic's 28,800 modems over the next 2 months - with full implementation by October 1 at the latest. I know we have been saying that we would only support V34 when we could actually get modems with that moniker on the front, but we have been assured that the upgrade for these will be 'painless'. We needed to purchase some more modems anyway, so felt that this was a good chance to see what all the fuss was about. (anyone want to buy some slightly used USR 14,400's cheap?) We will be offering the older modems to customers that want to upgrade from 2400's etc.

Power Problems cause crash

VANBC went down Wednesday (Aug 3) when a power blip from a lightning strike happened. This was NOT according to plan. We have UPS's on all of our Burnaby equipment but it appears that the brownouts of last week caused the one on vanbc to fail. The new one should be here by early next week.

Aug 4, 1994 - New pricing

I'm sorry, but it appears that my initial understanding of the magnitude of the change in pricing we will undergo from BC Tel's re-classification of our modem lines from Business Measured Overline to Business Overline was off by about 70%. We won't be hit by a 120% increase, it is instead a 189% (thanks for the math lesson Peter) increase, from $30.15/line to $87.30/line. We will deffinitely be increasing our prices in response to this, although not by 189%, more likely it will be about 20% or less. The new pricing will be in effect for September, watch for details.
