Word has it that ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) has been a royal pain to the phone companies in Canada, but that there are moves afoot to make it a more palitable offering. By limiting its use to 'computer dial tone' instead of real dial tone, the phone companies make use of more traditional routers instead of expensive ISDN switches to route the users' requests.

In one scenario, the local telco will provide copper local loops to terminal servers running TCP/IP via PPP (Point to Point Protocol) for as little as $50/month including connection to the Internet. The facility is similar to that gained by dialing your local Internet provider, except that the speed is much higher - 128kbs as opposed to a maximum analogue speed of 28,800bps (V34). You still have to have a provider for your mail box and Usenet news feed, as well as name service and WWW home page.
