The Big Boys
IBM seems to be heading for the stars. Their next version of OS/2 is code named WARP and is due out early this month. The next version is code named Klingon due for first half of 1995.
The WARP product is a complete rewrite it seems, and should include some interesting features. The ones that interest this writer are the TCP/IP and preemptive multi-tasking, both of which bring it closer and closer to being UNIX.
Watch for the various Power Companies to get into the Information Highway scene as backbone providers. Their vast rights of way combined with an upcoming loss of radio bandwidth makes plowing in miles of fibre-optic cable a very interesting business opportunity.
Bits on the Highway
- Canada Computer World September 23, 1994 reports that E-mail usage is going to surge from 43.4 million mail boxes to 67 million by 1998. Quoting a report from BIS Strategic Decisions of Norwell Mass., they note that this only represents LAN E-mail systems. No mention is made of the number connected to the Internet.
- We found an interesting pointer to Economic Information on the Internet. The source was a mail list we subscribe to which carries traffic on the commercialization of the Internet.
Off the Beaten Track
Its not part of the Highway yet, but DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) has announced the first microporcessor capable of 1 Billion instructions per second! The 64 bit Alpha runs at 300MHz, again a first. Watch for this puppy in high end UNIX and Windows NT boxes - wow!
In the Dust
The printing business is rapidly moving towards a complete digital path from conception to the printing press, bypassing the standard film stage by writing directly to the printing plate. A whole sector of the printing industry is about to disapear. Shades of what might happen if the World Wide Web really gets going. Just think of all those trees we'll save and all the printers we will put out of business.
