What's New at Wimsey

People, places and things around Wimsey. This column will look at Wimsey and the people that make it function.

Found an interesting piece by one of the creators of NWHQ, Elizabeth Fischer called Graffiti on the Web.

A sample on-line slide show - used for our Seminar on October 5th.

We did it again! - a second set of statements needed to be sent out. We spent so much time checking all of the strange things that could happen, we forgot to actually look at the data! It was last month's as was pointed out to us by several people within a few minutes of sending them - thanks. The Notes which accompanied the original set are here for your reference.

The replacements should start going out by about 9PM Monday.

I know that it may be hard to understand how such an event can occur, but it can and does. The problem is that since we E-mail the statements directly out of the accounting system, we don't print out and stuff envelopes as most businesses do - so we don't have a chance to actually look at more than a few chosen at random (except those we are specifically looking for problem correction on.) I am beginning to appreciate the amount of problems that a dedicated accounts receivable clerk can spot in such a setup.

We are trying pretty hard to run a 'paperless office'. We don't print out paper copies of outgoing correspondance, and we try to do as much as possible with E-mail. This is not just a sop to the environmentalists, it is a real attempt to control the cost of doing business by eliminating physical storage and the space and cost of providing it.

Wimsey's phone numbers are changing! OCTOBER 24, 1994

Wimsey has NEW PHONE NUMBERS as of October 24, 1994
	Voice: 257-1111
	  Fax: 257-1110

	Modem - 14,400 (V32bis) 257-1100
	Modem - 28,800 (V34) 257-1101

All other numbers will be disconnected as soon after October 24 as possible. There will be operator intercept on the voice and fax to tell you the new number. The Modem numbers currently in use will have a small number of call forward lines in place for a short time.

This change is in response to the change in tarrif by BC Tel affecting the Business Measured Overlines that Wimsey (and virtually all BBSs) have been using for years. We are changing to a service which substantially lowers our per line costs from what we would have had to pay for Business Overline as of October 31. The only downside is that this requires that we change all of our numbers to ones in the new exchange.

We appologize for the short notice however we only got the numbers assigned to us Last Friday.

The change will mean that all of the modem lines in Port Moody (937-7411) will be brought into our Burnaby location and merged with the new 257-1100 group. The rate for this new number will be $1.70 per hour. The rate for the 28,800 lines (257-1101) will remain at $2.00 per hour.

All users with special Port Moody rates will be contacted about new rates. The ones presently in effect will be honoured on the new numbers until the end of October during normal and off-peak hours (1AM - 7PM daily).

Note to all UUCP users: Please change your login scripts to use the "%ruucp" service request. Your chat script should be something like: ogin:-@-ogin:-@-ogin: yourname%ruucp sword: yourpassword If you are still using %uucp or not including a %service portion to your login you will not be able to connect with UUCP at all.
Note to all users of SLIP and PPP: The secondary name server at the old 192.48.234.1 address has been removed. The new name server address which has been in effect for over 4 months is: 198.162.16.1 If you have problems with 'ping' or with not being able to get news or mail from your own system, this may be the problem. Instructions for changing this address for MAC and Windows systems may be found from our 'helpdesk' command either through Mosaic or by logging on directly to the command line promt using a 'dumb' terminal program emulating either VT100 or ANSI type terminal and your user ID and password.
You may be wondering at the changes in the top level of our WWW site. One of the things you have probably noticed is the -> ^ <- arrows at the top of many of the pages. These are hot links that take you through our main items in a logical fashion simply by continuing to click on the -> arrow. The <- arrow will take you back in the opposite direction, and the ^ arrow will take you to the level above, usually an index. Let us know your experiences with this.
